The Stupidity of Zero Tolerance

If you've read much of what I've written you know that when I was a young teenager some friends and I  tried to build a rocket. With 20/20 hindsight, that was a totally stupid thing to do. We did  some of things right and and some  things quite wrong.
  • We set it off in an empty construction yard.
  • We mixed up Black Powder (Gun Powder) from easily obtainable chemicals. (OK, very stupid thing)
  • We had a long enough fuse to get our butts behind a berm.
The rocket exploded on it's erector-set gantry.

But just doing it was stupid. it was called a Pipe Bomb by the local news . As a side note we all grew up to be respected people in the sciences.

Today we might have been tracked down by the FBI and jailed.  the following column upsets the scientist in me.

What damage are we doing to natural curiosity?

Obama vows to keep at gun control: 'This is just the first round'

Here's the rest of the article:

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/05/02/18024051-obama-vows-to-keep-at-gun-control-this-is-just-the-first-round

Note the source? We need to have a national discussion about this. Note the May first article by the President

By “presidential proclamation” Barack Obama Declares May 1st “Loyalty Day”

And here's the article out of the White house.

I swore loyalty to the Constitution.

Am I going off of the deep end?

Christmas in Southeast Asia

I spent 1968-69 in Southeast Asia. At Christmas time I was at Korat AFB in Thailand. We were told that Bob Hope would be at the Base. I got there the afternoon before the show and we pretty much partied overnight waiting for Mr. Hope and company.

He brought Ann-Margaret, Rosie Greer, the Gold-diggers and his usual gang. Jerry Colona and his Dolores Hope were unable to be there. The show was great - the banter between Hope and us was one thing that was unexpected and fun. At the end of the show Hope explained that they would be doing Silent Night with the Cameras on us. His wife normally led the singing, but was home ill. So he and the cast led us.

Can you imagine a few hundred GI's singing and crying simultaneously? It was one of the most memorable events in my young life.

I've had a busy morning

I released three books for publication. They should pop up on Amazon in 5 to 7 days.

Stumbling through the Sixties: my newest child. it covers ten years of my life  - ten years that have totally changed the world.

Incentive: A short book that discusses the fact that you cannot provide incentive for your people, you can only set the stage so that they can provide their own incentive.

Decisions: I am especially proud of this short book. I explain qualitative and quantitive decision making and when to use either.

I'll let you know when they are available

Wowie Zowie

I have  readers  from China, Germany and South Korea. Welcome to my blog. If there is anything I say that upsets you or that you disagree with please let me know. My goal is for us all to learn from each other

Howie

An Answer to a major problem that faces us all!

One of my feet is slightly larger than the other. I googled "one foot bigger than the other" and got 36,000,000 hits - that's thirty-six million.

I can easily slip one shoe off, but I have to take the time to unlace and pull the shoe off of the other foot.

MY ANSWER: sell individual shoes in 1/4 size increments. I can take an 11 on one foot and a 10 3/4 on the other. See, simple solution?
